Pokemon characters with multiple tags, general issue.

Posted under General

If the desire is to merge these, I can submit the actual requests, but there are enough of these that I wanted to ask for general consensus before I go through the effort of tracking them all down.

Let me stress that the issue is with human pokemon characters. The species names of pokemon themselves are specifically handled differently according to the site documentation.

The issue is that the site is very inconsistent with how it handles character tags for human pokemon characters. The root of the issue is that it is very common for the characters to have totally different names in the English vs the Japanese. Kasumi vs Misty. Ash vs Satoshi, and so on for 8 generations of games and anime. Looking at the HowTo for names, the Japanese name should be the real tag, with an alias from the English tag. Unfortunately for the human pokemon characters this is not how it has developed. In many cases tags exist for both English and Japanese names, and pics are in one, the other, or both.

So technically by the rules that I can see all the ones in English name tags should be merged over to the Japanese name tags, and the English tag should become an alias. But there are likely a dozen (or more) characters with this problem. So I wanted a general consensus to do this before I put the effort into building up a proper request for these.

in general the pokemon tags are a mess. pokemon anime pokemon game pokemon this and that gamefreak nintendo. there just too many imo. you want to clean up the tags then do it lol.

One thing at a time. I'll look at the franchise (copyright) tags at some point. One problem is that those likely need a lot of manual work. The character tags should be able to be cleaned up with a few batch runs, at least in theory.

As for the franchise tags, you don't appear to do hierarchical tags much. XXX_(cosplay) auto-adding XXX seems to happen, so that's a hierarchy. Before I could begin to work on the franchise tags we would need to figure out exactly what we want each tag to mean. If I get to that point I'll start a separate thread on that subject. Before that I would need to survey what tags are out there to get an idea of where we are now.

For today though I'm focusing on the character tags. Since, as I mentioned, those are theoretically easy enough to actually merge/cleanup because they can be done in batch.

ah ok well what ever you want to do to improve this site im fine with.

I've been using tag script to fix tags manually. For example, if i wanted to change the tag "sample1" into "sample2" I would do a search of "sample1" then switch from view to tag script, use the script "-sample1 sample2" and click all the images in the search. Don't forget to do all the ones that have been deleted. It's time consuming, but effective, since the requests do not work. I literally did this to thousands of tags of "hi_res" to "highres". I still have to go back and change "hi_res" to "high_res" since people still use the improper tag. I think that people either use copy and paste tags, or the system auto tags files uploaded over a certain size. It's annoying...

Nice trick. I was totally unaware of that. I just tried it for Chihiro (there were 13 files with her name in western order), and it worked beautifully. Yeah, it's still one click per picture, but that's a lot better than having to enter edit mode for each picture.
